1843 stampless letter with CLAREMONT NH cancel describing the purchase of a horse which suddenly became lame, describes the horses condition, shoeing the horse etc, and mentions the closing down of the local bank. Interesting content, some minor toning on the cover upper & lower flap, the main letter however is in great shape. Letter transcribed below so read on; TRANSCRIPTION Claremont Sept 8 /43 Sir, I read yours of August 28 th & have been to Thetford for the horse but finding him to have been lamed since I first saw him & looking so much worse otherwise. I did not take him had it not been for that I should have bought him for you. I will state the true condition of Hera’s lameness as near as I can. The fray of the foot in nearly or quite sound – the heel is not as wide as it originally was ___ quarter of the foot has not spread but little if any this summer. He does not show lameness on soft ground but on hard ground at all time since the middle of July. I see but little if any improvement from 10 th of June to 15 th of August he wore tips & I did not ride him but very little & that on softish ground & as he showed no lameness I felt encouraged write to you accordingly since 15 th August. I put a pair of shoes on him & drove him some on harder roads & it is plain to be seen that the difficulty is not removed & I think it would read more
