CLASSIC EUROPEAN CARVED WOODEN MARIONETTE A WONDERFULLY CRAFTED CARICATURE OF A TRADITIONAL STORYBOOK CHARACTER. This "professional caliber" puppet measures approx. 19 inches in height and has all it's original strings to a vertical east-european style control for an overall height of approx. 38 inches. The quality of design and carving of the facial features is remarkable. The methods and style of carving would usually indicate a German heritage, but I believe this puppet is actually from Czechoslovakia, probably Prague or that surrounding area. The puppet maker used thin wood stain to accentuate and define the facial features. This allows the wonderful natural grain and coloration of the wood to really standout. There is no hiding of mis-steps in carving being masked or hidden here by filler putty and sanding. The puppet maker utilized his considerable skills to make a very high quality and collectible professional grade carved wood marionette. The expressive carved hands might appear to be oversize but are really appropriate to this caricature interpetation of a classic storybook character. The carved wood legs use a tongue & groove knee joint and a hangar hip joint to the wood torso. This Marionette is from the estate of a past president of The Puppeteers of America inc. He acquired it at a PofA National Puppetry Festival. It resided in his care for the past twenty plus years. The overall condition is excellent, especially when one considers the age. Obviously it has been well kept and cared for . While it is tempting to add this to my personal collection, space and practical considerations dictate that I find another suitable "home" for this great example of the puppeteers art.
