I'm very pleased to offer this classic specimen of Galena with very minor Sphalerite from the Tri-State district, USA. The specimen measures 5-1/2 x 5 x 3 inches and features a grey chert with a scattering of lustrous galena cubes modified by the octahedron. Tiny growth hillocks are present on all the crystals. The specimen is in excellent condition with one very tiny broken crystal along the edge (can easily be removed; in fact, I should have done this prior to taking photos!) and one 1/4-inch crystal that is cleaved. T is very minor lustrous black sphalerite associated--this is present as very tiny crystals that pepper the surface and require magnification to best appreciate.

I found this in an old stash of Tri-State material and this comes with no better locality information. The Tri-State district was one of the world's greatest mining districts and produced enormous tonnages of lead and zinc. The district is located at the junction of Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma and was also one of the world's greatest specimen-producing districts. Mining for primarily lead began around Joplin, MO and later concentrated on tremendous zinc reserves in the Kansas and Oklahoma portions, known as the Picher district.

The Tri-State district produced countless specimens and awesome specimens of several different minerals can be seen in collections worldwide. In fact, my favorite specimen in the world, bar none, is an old Tri-State piece from Missouri. This world-class specimen can be seen in the wonderful Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh. It is a LARGE and dramatic hemimorphite pseudomorph after calcite specimen and is no doubt the signature specimen for the Carnegie. The color is outrageous!!

This specimen sits well and is in excellent condition. The galena crystals are modified and this can be seen by the octahedral corners on the crystals. The luster is better than average for the district as well!
