This pottery comes from Mata Ortiz, a small village in the Mexican State of Chihuahua. Each piece is hand coiled using a method also employed by traditional Native American potters. Inspired by pottery shards left behind by prehistoric Casas Grandes peoples, Juan Quezada, the town's most famous artist, through painstaking trial and error was able revive this lost art. During the last thirty or so years, the design concepts have evolved to include amazing geometric patterns, fetishes, pre-Columbian and Mimbres designs. The complex designs painted with traditional brushes made of one to several human hairs, as well as their remarkably thin walled construction, make these pots a favorite of collectors.I have personally traveled to Mata Ortiz and picked out each piece, looking for quality representations of this fine art. All of my pieces are signed. This is a great example of the village artistry from Julio Mora who is profiled on page 116 of "The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz". It features rabbits around the top lip with a wonderfully executed geometric design, as well as a hand polished finish. dimensions: approx. 6 1/2" high; and 6 1/4" in diameter a support ring will accompany this piece Visit my Ebay store for more beautiful Mata Ortiz Pottery.
