A classical antique chuval, in my humble opinion Turkoman Ersari made first half of the 19th century. Measurements approx. 97 cm x 137 cm (or 38,2 inch x 53,9 inch).
The large weaving has pepper and salt colored relatively fine animal hair warps, and two relatively fine, lightly twisted undyed brown wool / animal hair wefts (each weft consisting of one strand) between eachrow of knots. The knots have been made of 2 yarns, but I also found knots made with three yarns (in the upper part of the bag, see photo 11). They are knotted asymmetric open to the left. Knot count per square inch: 12 vertical x 8 horizontal = 96 ( knot ratio of 3:2 ). Sides with later overcast. Top partly folded backwards. Original flatwoven band at the lower end of the elem . Floppy handle. The colors are an important part of the design: the darker red (the blood red) frames the central field (which has been done in a lighter color), something that can be found in older pieces. Perspective also seems to have been used; the secondary chemche guls seemingly stand still, facing the viewer, whilst the chuval major guls seem to be floating away to the right of the chuval. I have not washed the piece to make it possible to get a dating, if wanted. It is still dirty. A top piece. Items are described to my best knowledge. If you need extra information or want extra photos of certain details please let me know.About the dyes: tÂ's always a lot of interest in whether synthetic or natural dyes have been used for a piece. Although I will give my opinion about what I think might be the nature of a dye (providing I have some knowledge of the particular palette), it feel that I should not give guarantees in this field as I have a neither 20 years of experience in this field nor a chemical lab w I can actually do an analysis. I can really recommend an interesting article ("How do we distinguish natural from synthetic dyes?") by Steven Price about the difficulties of distinguishing between natural and chemical dyes can be found at the following webadres: /journal/pdyes.html Bid with confidence, I want 100% satisfied customers, so you will get your money back (minus costs of packaging and postage) if the item is not what you expected (I know how difficult it is to buy something without actually having it in your hands). No reserve auction. Shipping and handling(buyer pays actual s/h costs): by TNT Dutch mail: by other / private shipping company: please ask for quote Winners of the auctions, unless otherwise agreed, are expected to pay within 3 days!
