Opal is classed as a mineraloid rather than a mineral. It is an amorphous form of silica chemically similar to Quartz but with a relatively high amount of water present (up to 21%). Precious (or Gem) Opal is composed of spheres of silica packed in such a way that they set up refractions which cause the rainbow like flashes. Most Opal is 'common' rather than 'precious', common opal does not display the rainbow flashes and comes in numerous colours, typically white, grey and green. 25mm x 15mm x 12mm, 6gms (0.98in x 0.59in x 0.47in, 0.21oz) All sizes and weights are approximate.
