ClevengerEG Booz’s Old Cabin Whiskey Bottle GVII-12A Rare lip finish – in Light Blue / Vaseline color under Ultraviolet light! Manufacturers of classicreproductions of early American blown glass, the Clevenger Brothers Glass Company (later Glass Works) of Clayton, NJ produced reproductions of the Whitney E.G. Booz’s Old Cabin Whiskey bottle from 1930 to 1999. The first Booz Bottle reproduction with beveled roof corners was made at Clevengers in 1942. The earliest version of this bottle had an applied top, used at the Clevenger factory until just after World War II. To reduce production time, the applied tops were eliminated in favor of a simpler tooled top on the Booz, Jenny Lind, and Washington bottles that did not require the addition of a separate piece of glass. Before deciding on the style of finished top to be used, it appears that some trial pieces were made using a “graduated step” lip finish. Over the past twenty five years, I have seen only a handful of these bottles turn up – five Booz bottles, and about half a dozen large Washington bottles. Since several of these pieces have labels that read “Hand Made South Jersey Glass J. Harold Wells Merchantville, NJ,” it’s easy to date the pieces to the early-middle 1940s time period, when Wells was actively selling Clevenger glass.
