Charles Clewell was a metal worker, born in 1876, who perfected a technique of plating a ceramic item with a thin layer of copper or bronze, which when treated with an oxidizing agent, produced a natural patina and natural deterioration of the surface. Around 1923, after years of experimentation, Clewell learned to control the amount of patina so that the metal darkened and developed a unique turquoise blue/green corrosion. Working alone in his studio, Clewell usually marked his creations, and died never having passed on his secret processThis vase is signed and numbered, and is in excellent condition.
