Joseph Leyendecker was born in Germany on March 13, 1894 migrated with his family to Chicago at the age of 8. At the age of 25 having attended the prestigious Academia Julian he turned to commercial art as a full time career. Leyendecker created his fi rst Post Cover in 1899 . Over the next approximately five decades, until his death at the age of 77. Leyendecker created 522 Covers for The Saturday Evening Post and was rivaled only by his contemporary NORMAN ROCKWELL . Perhaps most familiar are the Leyendecker "HOLIDAY" COVERS Covering EASTER, 4 th of JULY, THANKSGIVING, and CHRISTMAS ISSUES.
