No. 141469 Made in JAPAN -The inscription on the box reads: Deluxe Blue-Bird Music-Lighter THE SAME LIGHTER as Seen on the ANTIQUES ROADSHOW!!! The following is an exerpt from the SHOW about this PIECE!!! SEE PHOTOS!! Coca-Cola "Dixie" lighter appraised by Rudy Franchi, of The Nostalgia Factory, in Boston, Massachusetts. Coca-Cola lighter Appraiser Rudy Franchi told Savannah visitor John that of all the collectibles and memorabilia Rudy has seen during his journeys with the ROADSHOW, the sheer volume of Coca-Cola products overwhelms all others. It might stand to reason âe" the soft-drink company has been around since 1888 and is a famously prolific advertiser. Nonetheless, Mr. Franchi said he does sometimes get the welcome chance to see an item he's never seen before, and John's quirky cigarette lighter is just such an object. On first glance it looks like a rather ordinary antique lighter, cream in color and branded with the Coca-Cola logo. But it has a special trick: When you flick a switch on the back, it plays a song. Mr. Franchi explained that in the 1950s, Coca-Cola produced two varieties of this lighter âe" one that played "God Bless America," and another that played "Dixie." For obvious reasons, the "Dixie" lighter turned out to be controversial and was subsequently recalled by the company. Interestingly enough, though John said he understood Coca-Cola originally released 5,000 of each variety, the company seemingly does not acknowledge that the "Dixie" lighter was ever made. He said he took the lighter to the Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta but did not see an example t and could not get any response about it from the museum. John paid $35 for the lighter in the mid-1980s, and said it has never been used or even filled with lighter fluid. "This goes beyond the normal appreciation of most Coca-Cola collectibles," Mr. Franchi said. "Most Coca-Cola lighters sell for well under $100, except for the ones that have a history âe" and this one has a history." Though difficult to value because of the lack of similar specimens on the market, Mr. Franchi guessed it could fetch an auction price today of between $3,500 and $4,000. Email us with Questions!!!
