Cody Foster ~CHAMPAGNE~ MERCURY GLASS CANDLESTICK Small A LOVELY Piece of Aged Mercury Glass from Cody Foster's ~Holiday Adornments~ Collection! New Color and Design for 2006! Prominent American Folk Artist, Cody Foster, has been very busy this year! In addition to expanding his very popular line of Retro-style holiday decorations ~ including his famous Bottle Brush Trees and Cardboard Houses, he has expanded his line of decorative items copied from antique pieces in his own personal collection. The Small Scalloped Candlestick is one of several beautiful, new Mercury Glass pieces he added to the ~Holiday Adornments 2006~ Collection from Cody Foster & Co. (formerly known as "Backporch Friends"). This ~Small Scalloped Candlestick~ is presented in "Champagne" ~ a beautiful shade of aged golden silver. It makes a fantastic and very romantic decorating statement.The Candlestick stands 7½-inches high. Its base is almost 3¼-inches in diameter, and the candle opening is approximately 1-inch in diameter. The piece is formed from mold blown, hollow glass which is coated on the interior with a metallic wash.Cody has perfectly captured the shine and "silvery" ghosting of antique Mercury Glass. It has a lovely patina with areas of light "tarnish" and opaqueness w the silvering has worn away ~ just like very old pieces. The Candlestick is ornate in design with lovely scalloped embossing around the base and tiered stem. The top is capped with a silver, base metal candle cup.Although Mercury Glass is most often associated with Christmas ornaments, it was at the height of its popularity and artistry during the Victorian period when it was often referred to as "poor man's silver." "Silvered glass, known most commonly as Mercury Glass, was born in the mid-1800s in England. It [was] formed through the rather ingenious method of creating double-walled glass with a hollow centre. Next, a liquid silvering agent, silver nitrate, [was] poured into the space between the two layers of glass, usually through a hole at the base, then it [was] swished about until it ad[d] to the walls and coat[ed] them in 'silver.' The remaining liquid [was] drained off, the piece [was] left to dry and a glass plug [was] used to seal the hole. Early experiments used mercury as a main ingredient in the silvering agent, hence the origin of the name for this type of glass, but it didn't work well and was discarded. Nevertheless, the term 'Mercury Glass' is now used to label just about any sort of silvered glass to this day. ~© David M. Issitt, "Collector C@fe." The result was a piece of glass that looked to be made of silver. The most beautiful pieces of antique Mercury Glass are those that remain from the 1800's and early part of the 20th century, but most of these have been lost due to their easy breakability. Cody has done a wonderful job of replicating some of these old beauties, and this Candlestick blends beautifully with antique and vintage Mercury Glass. It bears the "beauty marks" of age, and its aged golden silver coloration makes it even more intriguingly eclectic. A single piece or grouping of Mercury Glass looks incredible gracing a dining table, buffet, mantel, or even next to a soaking tub! In addition to this piece, Cody's Mercury Glass collection includes other Candlesticks, Vases, and Votive Holders in Champagne, Pink, Amber, Light Blue, and Aged Silver.
