Cody Foster ~RED TOADSTOOL CACHETTE~ Pâpier-Maché Candy Container NEW!This is a terrific new piece from the fertile imagination and talented hands of renown Folk Artist, Cody Foster. It is a genuine, authorized reproduction of Cody Foster's original art work presented by Cody Foster & Co. (formerly "Backporch Friends.") This delightful mushroom is crafted from pâpier-maché, formed in an antique style mold, and flocked and handpainted in vintage colors. This whimisical ~Red Toadstool~ looks like it's been hidden away for years, nestled in crumpled tissue paper, in a trunk in Grandmother's attic. I love the fairytale quality of this piece!This wonderful Toadstool is fashioned exactly like an antique German figural candy container. Originally, candy containers and figurals like these were the products of cottage industry and made in German homes or very small firms, from either a fixed design or a mold. They were all hand decorated. Their bodies were hollow to hold candy, nuts, and treats for Christmas, Halloween, and Easter. Children delighted in discovering the "treasures" that these papier maché figures concealed.Like its ancestors, this piece has a hollow body; and it opens at the stem to reveal an interior cavity. The opening is 1½-inches in diameter and over 4½-inches deep.The Mushroom stands 8-inches high. Its round base is 5 -inches in diameter. The Toadstool is fashioned to depict an Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the fly agaric or fly amanita. It is the "quintessential toadstool -- a large, white- gilled, white-spotted, red mushroom -- one of the most recognizable and widely encountered in popular culture."The large Toadstool cap is painted red and completely covered in fuzzy flocking. White gesso dots decorate the top of the cap. The underside is aged ivory, as is the Toadstool's stem. The bottom of the stem flares as it meets the base - a green, roundish mound also covered with flocking. But for its large size, this mushroom looks freshly plucked from a woodland glade. Can't you just picture a hookah-smoking caterpillar. . .The craftsmanship on this piece is incredible. It looks just like an authentic, vintage candy container and an antique botanical model. Its vintage coloring is fabulous !This imported piece is brand new and unused. It is in MINT condition and ready for your decorating projects! Lovingly distressed, its "worn" finish and soft, muted colors give this ~Red Toadstool Cachette~ a very "antique" or "vintage" feel and appearance. It would fit beautifully into a "Shabby," "Cottage Chic," "Country Primitive," or "Garden Style" home. It also makes a lovely gift box in which to hide a special treat or present. Only occasionally did they sell to shops or at craft shows, but when they did, Foster was usually in tow. They kept their grandson out of mischief by teaching him to thread a needle and sew rag dolls. 'I remember sitting at this one really boring craft show and [beginning to doodle],' he says. "When I got home, I made Sunshine Suzy-Q, my first doll.Foster began selling his creations by the time he was a sophomore in high school, doing craft shows in small communities in northern Nebraska and in larger areas such as Omaha and Rapid City, S.D. He admits to playing hooky from school to get ready for the shows.
