Up for auction is a beautiful European coffee biggin with all three parts. It measures 10" high including the knob. This biggin is pictured on page 83 of "Enameled Kitchenware American & European" by David T. Pikul & Ellen M. Plante, A Schiffer Book for Collectors. According to this book, the art deco influence was prominently displayed on the enameled ware manufactured (especially in Europe) between the late 1920s and 1940. Stencils and tissue paper transfers were commonly used to achieve geometric designs as this coffee pot shows. I believe this is a scarce, elaborate design done with the tissue paper and has a higher value than the more common place checks and squares. This is a well made piece with the body of the pot having a rolled seam under the handle and the handle secured with rivets. It has received a few nicks during its life and I have tried to show them in the pictures. The knob has enamel missing as well as 3 to 4 spots along the edge of the lid. The insert seems to be almost perfect with a chip to the enamel on the inside of the basket that does not show when it is together. The tin perforated drip screen is a little rusty, but it is all t The body of the biggin has two manufacturing flaws along the edge of the top, as well as a small chip to the top of the spout and to the side of the spout. I see one tiny chip on the base. Although it sounds like a lot, this pot is really in very good condition. I hope the pictures show that. The book value is between $300 and $400, so my opening bid is well below the estimated value. This beauty has graced my china closet for many years and it is now time to let someone else enjoy the handsomely designed coffee server.
