This beautiful 3-handled vase up for auction today is the style that both the A. R. Cole Pottery (Rainbow Pottery) and the J. B. Cole Pottery produced during the 1930's. In fact, for a nearly identical example by A. R. Cole, see the piece photographed on page 153 of "North Carolina Art Pottery" by Everette James. For this same shape attributed to J. B. Cole, see page 48 and page 118 of Robert Lock's book "The Traditional Potters of Seagrove, North Carolina". The darker toned clay used in today's unsigned piece is something you'll occasionally see with North State Pottery pieces, but the shape and style of this three-handled vase is so characteristic of the Coles, and the form is such a dead ringer for the A. R. Cole example pictured in James' book, that an attribution to A. R. Cole Pottery is the best bet. The glaze on today's piece is much nicer than the book's example - it's a complex sea green tone that appears to be double-dipped such that t are some pretty glaze drips, nearly crystalline in appearance, running down on the shoulder and from the handles. This vase has substantial size to it as well, standing nearly 7 inches tall with a diameter of 9 inches. It holds a full gallon of water! Condition of the piece is excellent with just a few small flakes right at the base that I've shown in a close-up photo and a small in-the-making read more
