"The Cathedral, on Jackson Square, New Orleans", watercolor and gouache on board, signed and dated "Colin Campbell Cooper, New Orleans, 1 July 1921" lower left, titled en verso, 14 1/4 in. x 17 1/2 in., attractively framed.
Provenance: The Charleston Renaissance Gallery, South Carolina, 2000.
Note: The allure of the French Quarter during the early twentieth century, with its bohemian community of artists and writers, unique culture and historic buildings, attracted the nationally acclaimed American Impressionist artist Colin Campbell Cooper. Two watercolor sketches of the "French Quarter Carriage Way" and "Tea Room, Exchange Alley" by Cooper have been sold in these rooms. During the oppressively hot and humid summer months in 1921, Cooper visited the city, where he captured the historically significant buildings along Chartres Street on Jackson Square in this beautifully rendered painting. A timepiece, the painting showed a cannon positioned on the square and the Cabildo prior to the iron fencing.
