COLLECTIBLE & SIGNED WEDDING VASE POTTERY BY RITA MANYGOATS, NOTED NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIST NAVAJO WEDDING VASE BY R. MANYGOATS: Rita Manygoats is the daughter of Betty Manygoats, an award-winning Navajo potter. Rita is also a talented pottery maker who hand builds and fires her pieces by traditional methods. Though taught by her mother, Rita has developed her own particular style of pottery. Her pots feature appliquéd effigies of the horned toad and ears of corn, and some are done with "lifestyle" pictures, usually on the traditional Navajo ceremonial wedding vase, but on ollas and other items, as well. Rita signs her work, "RM", also "R. Manygoats" in cursive signature style sometimes adding, "-Navajo-". Navajo pitch pottery is a low temperature fired ceramic. Variations in color and dark areas on the pots that are referred to as "fire clouds" result from and are a "signature" of the traditional firing process that uses sheep dung as fuel.
