Collectible Antique Seth Thomas Shelf Clock Rare Condition. Rare Quality and running condition Have you considered buying an old clock or clocks to enjoy and pass down in your family? Especially in days gone by, a windup clock was not just a household fixture. The clock was a treasured piece of furniture and became part of the family. These clocks were often handed down through the generations. All of a sudden, electric clocks came along. Advertisement made the old wind up clocks seem unnecessary and outdated. Many of these fine clocks were just thrown away or tossed in attics. Now many people are beginning to appreciate these old crafted clocks as investments to be enjoyed and passed on to heirs. This is a clock that your family could treasure and the memories with it for years to come. Imagine having a clock in your home that is close to a 150 years old and still keeping dependable time for your enjoyment. You will enjoy the soft ticking sound along with the pleasant gong counting the hours and half hour strikes. This would make a cherished gift for a wedding or anniversary. Seth Thomas clocks are some of the most collectible of old clocks known for their quality workmanship and accuracy of movement. This clock dates from just after the civil war when Seth Thomas had died and his sons were running the company. The local residents had renamed their town from Plymouth Hollow to Thomaston in honor of Seth Thomas. The size of this clock is 12 inches wide at the base, 16 inches tall and 5 inches thick at the base. The Clock works are stamped Plymouth , Conn. The label inside the clock case clearly says Thomaston. Conn. Tfore, I would think that this clock works and case are near the time around 1865. I am not sure of the age but the person I bought it from said that his research placed it right around the end of the civil war. This clock is in rare condition, chimes, and runs with amazing accuracy that rivals electric clocks. It is an 8-day clock so it only needs to be wound each week. It chimes according to the hour and strikes the half hour. The case appears to be walnut and it gleams. Everything appears original. It even has real gold paint trim. Yes, paint that was made of real powered gold. The original dial is in great condition. Some of the paint has flaked off, but no worry the dial displays perfectly with the door closed and the missing paint does not show. This clock is running in my living room and keeps perfect time. About 3 years ago, the person that I purchased this clock from had it serviced and cleaned by a clock technician. I stored the clock in my collection and just started running it about 3 months ago. If I were not moving, I would not sell this clock. The label is in excellent condition as you can see in the pictures. I have the original key and pendulum for it. Some of the gold paint is worn off in a few areas due to its age, but this does not detract from this wonderful clock. I choose to leave it just as it is because of its rare great condition, age, and the well-known clock name of Seth Thomas. For its advanced age, this really is a rare find and because of this, I have placed a reserve that befits this wonderful timepiece.
