Tear Drop Natural Forest Green MOLDAVITE Weight: 13.2 grams (66 carats) Hello and welcome to our auctions. Moldavites get their name from the Moldau River Valley (north of Prague in present-day Czech Republic), w they were first discovered during the late 18th century. They belong to the tektite family and are the only gem-quality rocks of non-terrestrial origin. The formation of tektites is still a topic of debate among the scientific community but it is now widely held that they are the result of meteor showers. Right before the point of impact with the Earth surface, the air cushion (between the meteor and the Earth) is raised to extreme pressure and temperature, tby melting and spewing molten sand globules into the air. These then fall back onto the Earth surface, probably mixed with some residual material from the meteor, subsequently cooling and solidifying on different natural surfaces such as tree bark, boulders or rivers (which account for their varying forms and typically bark-like surfaces). Moldavites are thus amorphous glass, predominantly SiO2. It is believed that moldavites were formed about 14.8 million years ago. The moldavite I selected for you has one of those highly sought after "tear drop" formation. As you can see in the pictures, the stone has excellent color and translucence.
