Up for auction is a Rare Collins & Company, First Model, US Military M1890 Type 1 Pattern, #1005 Engineer's Bolo Knife/Machete. With the Early Authentic Light Green Horn Handle Grips plus the Original Fancy Leather Stamped, Military Brass Fitted Scabbard. The overall condition of the knife and scabbard is very good with typical age wear from commissioned military service use. The blade wear is not extensive, the finish is smooth with light oxidation and some slight pitting to only a small portion of the front right side, about 5% overall. The blade's original logo had been lightly stamped and, along with its age and use wear, is still readable. Although the original edge has been resharpened at some point, I do not believe it was done anytime recently. The green horn handles are complete and in remarkable condition for their age, their is a small inconspicious, gnaw mark (chew) on the left scale and an original imperfection in the growth layers of the horn itself on the right side, which has caused a small split and a slight peeling in the center which does not compromise its integrity at all. Both, almost not worth noting. The fancy leather scabbard is remarkable, and after nearly a hundred years of existence, has only two small holes and a slight separation in the scabbard, at the point w the bottom brass fitting meets the leather portion. Also, t is an inch or so of alligatoring (crackling) of the font center portion and the belt loop has separated. The brass fittings look like they have been polished or kept cleaned through the years. On the front a Collins logo and the embossed fancy design is also still visible in the leather, on the back are some lettering which reads "D 307 ENG" (possibly a rack or unit indication) and acknowledging that the original rivets and stitching are completely intact, to complete this description. A detailed and thorough explaination was not presented to detract from the collectibility or value of this historical antique, and only made to fully note any condition that would not otherwise be overlooked when viewed by the serious and informed collector. An extensive picture section has been also provided for further examination this great find. I will be happy to answer any questions, concerning this item to the best of my ability, so please be specific, Thanks!!!
