This is an outstanding 7-piece fish platter and plates set; it is by far the most colorful we've ever seen. We have been calling this our "mystery fish set", because we have not been able to determine its origin. This set is marked "Limoges" and "Limoges China", but we are doubtful that it came from France. We have done an immense amount of research on this set, and we have not been able to be 100% sure of its history! In the next paragraph, we will describe what we believe these to be, but if you are a collector who can offer info on this set, it will be much appreciated. In 1900, a company by the name of Sterling China Company was established in Sebring, Ohio. Since the name 'Sterling China' was already in use, they were forced to change their name to "Sebring" china. Soon after their opening, they began producing semi-porcelain ware, which they marked "Limoges China Co.". At the time, porcelain from Limoges, France was very popular, and also very expensive. So the American-made "Limoges" was produced for the average income family. In the 1940's, a Limoges of France maker disputed the American company's use of the Limoges name. Tfore, in 1949, Sebring changed their "Limoges China" company name to "American Limoges Company". Shortly after, in 1955, the company was sold. From our research, we have found that MOST of the china made by Sebring was marked "Made in USA". We have diligently tried to find the marks on this set, and have not been able to find them. These are not the fine French porcelain with which we are familiar. The pieces have uniform crazing, which is not found on good Limoges, France porcelain. This set may be one of the very earliest sets that were made in USA, and not marked as such. The set consists of one platter, four plates, a small lemon platter, and a sauce, or butter, bowl. None of these pieces have any damage. T is very little gold wear. If you notice the outer rims of the pieces, they have been hand-painted. Most of the painting has faded over the years. Some is faded so much that you can barely detect w t was color. The fish are transfers. The pieces are molded in relief, and you may notice a clover leaf design in the mold, and also in the stenciled gold design. They are very attractive, and would make a wonderful display. Of course, they could be used, too! The platter is 21 1/4" x 8 3/8" and stands 2" high. It is the piece that is marked "Limoges" in green. T are four plates that are 9 1/4". They are 4 different fish designs. T is some minor scratching on them. Only one plate is marked "Limoges China", in green. T is one lemon platter, which is 8" x 5 1/4". It is not marked. The sauce/butter bowl is 3 1/8" high and 5 1/8" across the top. It has a fish design on 2 sides. It is not marked. As previously mentioned, t is no damage, t is fading to the painting around the rims, and uniform crazing. We reserve the right to end auctions early if t are no bids.
