Living in small, scattered settlements high in the Sierra Madre Mountains of central-western Mexico, is an indigenous tribe of unique and magical people known as Huichols. They remain as one of the last tribes of people in North America who still live as much as they did in pre-Columbian times, maintaining the same ageless rituals and beliefs. Due to the decreasing fertility (and tfore productivity) of the land surrounding their villages, they have come to depend more on the sale of their artwork for sustenance. Many have moved to cities in Jalisco & Nayarit.
The Huichol are highly creative people and reflect their strong ceremonial traditions and rich mythology in their visionary artwork. The Huichol beliefs are complex and elaborate, involving myth, shamanism, ritual, prayer and ceremony In their artwork, Huichol Indians express their deepest religious feelings and beliefs acquired through a lifetime of participation in ceremonies and rites. From the time they are children, they learn to communicate with the spirit world through symbols and rituals.
This art form is made pressing tiny glass beads one by one onto a form, which is covered in a beeswax mixture, creating an incredible mosaic of colors and symbols. I acquired this piece on a recent trip to Mexico. This is a wooden box that opens.
