(Colton, C.B.). Colton's Rail-Road and Military Map of The States, Mexico, The West Indies &cc. New York. Published by G.W. and C.B. Colton. 1865. 40 1/2 x 31 inches. The enormous hand-colored map is primarily of the United States. All the states of the nation are in their present-day configuration except Indian Territory si shown above Texas; a large Dakota occupies present-day North and South Dakota; and Nevada has note reached its present-day configuration. The railroad network is shown in the eastern part of the United States, being completely absent in the West. A rudimentary rail system is shown in Texas. Army forts are located throughout the West being particularly prominent in Texas, w the line of frontier forts extends in a north-south axis through the state. Around the bottom and up the side of the map are nine insets which include a 12 x 12 inch "Map of the Americas, Africa, and a Portion of Europe Showing the Atlantic and Parts of the Pacific Ocean;" "New Orleans, and Delta of the Mississippi"; "Mobile Harbor;" "Key West and Tortugas;" "Wilmington and Vicinity;" "Beaufort and Vicinity;" "Norfolk, Fortress Monroe, James River, Richmond, Petersburgh &cc &cc;" "Map of Charleston, Port Royal & Savannah;" and "Washington, Manassas Junction, Harper's Ferry, Baltimore, Annapolis, &c &c." In addition t are on the left statistical tables showing the U.S. Census of 1860 with the number of whites and slaves in each state. A proposed Pacific Railroad route is shown running through Texas to California. This map is filled with information and is extremely detailed. It has several small holes w the map has broken at the folds, but the entire map has been deacidified and laminated onto very heavy museum Board. A spectacular display map. Fine condition.
