This particular model Columbia Graphophone Type B "Eagle" became very popular after being introduced in 1897 because of its price. It sold for $10.00 without the cover (a $10.00 gold piece was called an Eagle) and it sold for $12.00 with the cover like this example. The cover has a nice original Graphophone Decal. The machine has a two spring motor with an exposed mechanism which is great to watch when it is playing. It has original winding key and two nice identification plates mounted on oak board. It has the large type reproduction D reproducer for clear sound with a perfect stylus so it will not harm cylinders. It plays any standard 2 minute type cylinder records. It also comes with a 10 inch reproduction black cone horn with gold stripe which was sold with the machine when new. It plays loud and clear for a little machine. This Graphophone changed the industry. An Edison Cylinder Phonograph from the same time cost about $100.00. So the Type B became affordable and brought music into the homes of many people in the late 1890s. The machine also comes with two clean original Indestructible cylinders (these are made of celluloid and will not break). One is in an original Columbia box and one is in an original Edison box. The machine is 11 7/8 inches in length, 7 1/2 inches in width and 6 1/2 inches in height. The whole package: machine, horn and cylinders weigh 8 1/2 lbs. net.
