"COMPASS" Pattern Variation QUILT

Made about 1880. From New England. All Cottons. Double or Single size: approx. 64 inches by 76 inches. Very good condition, with some age staining (textile foxing) on the tan ground fabric as can be seen in the detail photo. Expertly quilted - as can also be seen in the detail photo. This is a very serviceable and usable quilt.

The Maroon Print BINDING encloses a field of an extensively quilted Tan Print GROUND with 30 (6 Rows of 5) Ochre Oranged Centered "COMPASS" Pattern PATCHES made up of Post-Civil War fabrics. The "Arms" and "Points" of the COMPASS Patches are composed of Red, "Double Pink", Indigo Blue, Deep Brown and Black Prints which spin in various light/dark combinations. The OCHRE ORANGE color used in the centers was much prized and admired in the post-Civil War era; it adds a great deal of verve in this handsome quilt.

QUILTS OF MANY FABRICS were produced by Makers who were the "COLORISTS" of their Art. Quilters were the "DRAFTSMEN" who plied their craft after the design had been "pieced" together. Quilters preferred large, open expanses of cloth on which to stitch elaborate handiwork. Colorists were more concerned with the collection and juxtaposition of many fabrics. Whether by choice or circumstance, these analytic and synthetic constructs of the Colorists occupied a parallel path to the Quilter - together they form the American Quilt Tradition.

Do not be put off by the "foxing" which is more evident on one side of the quilt. All antique quilts show blemishes and aging of some kind. This is not a glaring blemish, but this is a factor in this very reasonably priced gem. This COMPASS quilt is highly recommended for bedroom use.
