Complete Set of Eight B-24D Service Manuals - w/Case - 1942-3
This lot was donated to the Oregon Air & Space Museum, Eugene, OR, and since it duplicates another set already in the museum’s collection, it has been deeded surplus, and is therefore offered for sale. There are 8 manuals in all: “Airplane General”, “Flight Manual”, “Power Plant”, “Armament Manual”, “Hydraulics”, “Electricity”, “Radio Manual”, and “Stewart Warner South Wind Hermetic Combustion Heaters for the Consolidated Aircraft Corp. B-24 and PB4Y 4-Engine Bombers”. All but the last one listed are bound as sewn ‘signatures’ in heavy dark-brown buckram, a type of nubbly, simulated leather cloth used on books that are expected to get a great deal of use. All but the last one were published by Consolidated Aircraft Corp.. ALL were published in either 1942 or 1943! The heater manual was put together and published by Stewart Warner, in a soft-bound form, 3-hole punched. They all fit into a simulated leather case, made specifically for this set, that is stitched together. On the front flap, just above the buckle, is “T.E. Miller” embossed in gold letters. Who T.E.M. was, is a mystery, since this was donated very close to the founding of the museum in the early 1990s. No donation form could be found, and nobody on the staff recognizes the name. This in no way lessens the value of this group of manuals, which are all in remarkable condition. All the manuals are printed on high quality, clay coated paper, very much like the best magazines. They are highly illustrated, with color used wherever that would make schematic diagrams and/or systems more easily understood or traced. The condition of the manuals, inside and out, is Near New for all but the heater manual which is Very Good +. Since the majority of the work on these bombers was done by systems mechanics and technicians back at the base, sets like this one, if it was the one carried on board, it received little use in most cases. The carrying case is also in Very Good + condition, with some scattered light scuffing being the only fault. Shipping weight is 23 pounds, the majority of that weight being the manuals. The manuals could be shipped without the case for about $12, via Media Mail. The case could be shipped separately via Parcel Post for about $10. Combined, all going Parcel Post, it would cost about $30, domestically. International bidders are invited to contact me for a shipping quote to their country. I welcome questions and/or comments.
