They have a nanostructure composed of extremely small interconnected particles (like pearls on a pearl necklace) with diameters of about 50 nanometers. Between these particle strings are pore spaces that are typically less than 100 nanometers (about 100 times smaller than the thickness of hair). This structure results in a solid material with nano-sized pores, low density, and high porosity. It is these structural features that impart the remarkable acoustic, mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of aerogels. Silica aerogel is the lightest and lowest-density solid known to exist; it can have a density that is only three times that of air. Silica aerogel densities range from 1.0 to around 300 mg/cm³. Silica aerogel has a porous, sponge-like structure in which greater than 98 % percent of the volume is empty space (air). Even though the silica aerogel is mostly air, one of its remarkable features is that it can withstand many times its weight in compressive force. Silica aerogel has a large internal surface area; the entire surface of a football field can be stuffed into a one inch cube of silica aerogel.
