You're bidding on an antique one-volume complete works of William Shakespeare, edited by writer and Victorian period Shakpearian scholar Mary Cowden Clarke, and published 1872 by D. Appleton & Company, New York. This is a beautiful and elegant copy - the leather cover looks almost biblical with embossed Victorian design on front and back cover, ribbed spine and "Shakespeare" in gilt lettering on both covers and spine. Decorative endpapers and page edges gilt on all three sides. Contains all of the plays, sonnets and poems, as well as well as other interesting content, such as the dedication and address from the First Folio and Shakespeare's will. Engraved portrait of Shakespeare opposite the title page, and six beautiful engraved illustration plates within of major female characters from the plays. Book is in very good condition for the age and type of publication - cover has some shelf wear, but retains its overall appeal and luxuriousness. Binding is solid with no splits, separation or hinge cracking. The gilding on the page edges is in good condition with much lustre. There is some age-discoloration and occasional slight foxing or spotting througout the book, but overall appearance is clean and appealing. There are two instances of notes and marginalia in pencil that I noticed within "The Merry Wives Of Windsor", otherwise no read more
