The green oval tin with legend on lid reading: `Miner`s Improved Gold Scales/Manufactured Expressly for California`, with federal eagle. Tin contains a set of hand-held brass balance scales with separate compartment containing five counter weights and one ball bearing. Used by the gold rush miners of California to weigh gold dust and nuggets. 2) Antique Booklet Titled: Practical Treatise: Cold, Silver, Quicksilver and Lead by Edward Pique. 1860, San Francisco. Essentially a primer on the mineral ores of California, and explanation of the refining process for the new prospector or miner. 500 - 700
