Original Confederate Enlisted Man's Cavalry Saber
This is an outstanding condition, all original saber. This scarce style is without doubt attributable to Columbus, Georgia. The scabbard is typical Columbus, with large iron throat and drag, crudely soldered lap seam, and crudely cast ring mounts. The identical scabbard is found on all Haiman cavalry sabers. The maker of these particular sabers with twisted brass wire, assembly numbers stamped in the quillon, and finely polished rounded back blades is not precisely known. The grip profile and oilcloth wrap are identical to Haiman sabers. Haimans, of course, have heavy single strand wire and flat back blades. Some believe this is a higher grade version of Haiman's. I, however, believe these may be DeWitt sabers. DeWitt made just over 1,500 cavalry sabers and just what they looked like has never been determined. But if we keep in mind that DeWitt occupied the basement floor in the exact same building as Haiman in the first year of the war (Haiman on the 4th floor), it seems reasonable to me that besides using the same scabbard maker, DeWitt cav sabers should share similar traits as Haimans. About ten Haiman sabers are found for every one of these. Regardless of the maker, this is a great Confederate saber in its original scabbard and is suitable for any collection. Condition: This blade is simply outstanding, having almost all of its original finish and tooling marks. It has NEVER been cleaned or sharpened. It has NO edge nicks, and the tip has not been reshaped. It has scattered light grey staining. No finer blade can be found on an enlisted man's saber. The original oilcloth grip and twisted brass wire are near 100%, with just some minor finish missing in wear spots. The grip is canted about 10 degrees to the right, and appears to have been made that way. All parts are tight. The scabbard is excellent with no dents or weak spots. The crude brass mounts show an unusually poor mix where large areas of more pure copper show through. The top of the pommel cap also has a region of high copper content. Such poor quality control is typical of many CS products. I did replace one of the iron rings which was missing, for display purposes only. Payment by paypal expected within two days. Please feel free to post questions, and I will give my phone number for personal consultations.
