CONFEDERATE Soldier ID'd as, "Harry W. GILMOR" - 2ND MARYLAND Cavalry BATTALION, COMPANY S CSA Sepia CDV CORRECT IDENTITY is Harry W. Gilmore, The Rebel Raider (full front) Incorrectly ID'd as Charlie May,The Rebel Raider (back / verso) CORRECT ID is: HARRY W. GILMOR, Rebel Raider For your information, this cdv is a "Rebel Raider" alright--but not Charlie May! This illustrious gentleman is actually Confederate Colonel Harry W. Gilmor, commander of the 2nd Maryland Cavalry Battalion. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Colonel Gilmor was a hell-bent-for-leather leader of Confederate partizan rangers during the Civil War. After the War, he wrote the book, "Four Years in the Saddle." I have been a collector of Confederate cavalry memorabilia for almost thirty years and I have never seen this particular pose of Gilmor before. Most likely, the image was taken after the War. FYI - Gilmor was a notorious womanizer as well! Presented for your consideration is an antique / vintage, Carte de Visite (CDV) in sepia - circa the Civil War years - this is an original period item ... featured is a photographic image taken of a moustachioed fellow ID'd as, "Charlie May, The Rebel Raider" ... please note: whoever wrote the name on the back of the CDV and on the mount underneath the photo have it wrong ... the correct identity of this soldier of the confederacy is, "Harry W. FYI Gilmor was also a notorious womanizer! Harry W. Gilmor (January 24, 1838 – March 4, 1883) served as Baltimore City Police Commissioner in the 1870s, but he was most noted as a Confederate cavalry officer during the American Civil War. Gilmor's daring raids, such as The Magnolia Station Raid gained his partisans fame as "Gilmor's Raiders". My sincere thanks to both of the gentlemen who kindly and graciously contacted me with the correct identification of this soldier of the Confederacy! Approximate measurements: 2-1/2" x 4" ... CDV does not lie completely flat ... note: there is an area in the photo near the eyebrow, eye, temple area, etc., where the image is not flat against the card - in other words - it is somewhat raised where the photo did not get glued down entirely or the glue gave way ... in addition, there is a pinhole mark through the card at top and just right of center ... please read below for further issues to be expected and examine the scans carefully as they constitute the primary description ... if you have any questions - please ask prior to bidding Back / verso of CDV contains the advertising for the Photographer / Studio identified as, "J.
