Here is the wreath portion and broken tongue piece of a 2-piece tongue & wreath buckle I recovered in 1977 near the town of Culpeper, VA (known in Civil War days as Culpeper Court House.) The site was where General James Longstreet's 1st Corps of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was encamped in 1863 prior to beginning the march northward that culminated at Gettysburg. The wreath has an oak-leaf design with 4 ribbon ties and plain belt loops. This design was used primarily on several styles of Virginia buckles, but on Alabama 2-piece buckles as well. It was not used on any CS-disc 2-piece buckles to my knowledge. Longstreet's Corps had an entire Division (Pickett's) of Virginia troops, as well as General Evander Law's Brigade of Alabama troops in Hood's Division. Beyond that, it'd be pure speculation. The wreath part is in fabulous condition. I excavated the broken piece only about 2 feet away from the wreath, so there's no question that they originally belonged on the same belt.I have no idea what the current market value would be for something like this, so I've put a very low opening bid amount on it with no reserve. I will ship it FREE by Priority Mail in the Riker display/storage case as shown.I never sold any of my recovered artifacts until a couple of months ago (not even a bullet.) I've been metal detecting since 1961- over read more
