Rare Confederate States of America - .925 Sterling Silver Commemorative Cameo Proof Coin - was purchased from the Centre House of Lexington, KY. who commissioned this coin. Rarely seen on sale. Very Limited Edition. Solid .925 sterling silver stamped "STERLING" on the edge of the coin, see photo #5. This coin commemorates the Confederate States of America minting of coins. Early in the Civil War, the Louisiana CSA captured the U.S. Mint facility in New Orleans. Under the direction of the Confederate President Jefferson Davis, the C.S.A. cabinet proceeded with plans to issue a complete system of currency including coins of various denominations. The first coin to be issued was the famous Confederate Half Dollar. Only four Die Proofs were struck because of a shortage of bullion , due to the infamous Yankee Blockade. No additional coins were ever minted. These original four proof coins are extremely rare and priced accordingly. Review the above photos carefully.
