NO RESERVE on this original Cival War South Carolina Confederate Slouch Hat. This is a original civil war slouch hat, The hat is made of black wool felt with a ribbed cotton edge to the brim of the hat. The hat has the right side hat brim tied up, the tied up brim is held in place with two pewter buttons. The top button is a local made South Carolina button, the lower button is the standard confederate "I" button. The South Carolina button is 7/8 of a inch in dia. , the "I" button measures 5/8 of a inch in dia. Both buttons have nice old patina to them, they appear to have never been cleaned or polished. The black felt hat body is in great shape for it's age, no rips or tears. The cotton ribbed edge to the brim of the hat does have some light damage to the front edge. The silk hat band on the hat has damage and has started to fall apart. The Slouch hat still has its original lining and leather sweat band. The lining is in good shape and is maker marked in the crown. The maker mark is hard to make out but it looks like a crown and says PARIS under the crown. The leather sweat band is complete and is made of three pieces of leather. The front section of leather has the name J.A.Cay that can be made out still but the rest of the liner marking can not be made out except for the last part which says SC Vol Inf. The hat is very dirty and in as found condition, I have no idea haw to clean or conserve this hat so it is being sold as found. The hat was found in Missouri when I was doing restoration on a house that was built in 1854. The hat was found in the attic with a Southern Cross of Honor to the same man. I have the Confederate Southern Cross of Honor listed in my other auctions and hope both items will stay together . Please look at all the photos I have posted with the listing showing all sides of this Slouch Hat and the interior of the hat. I am starting the Slouch hat out at 135.00 and it will sell to the highest bidder. I do not collect civil war items and have decided to sell the hat so someone can enjoy it and take care of it as it should be. Please feel free to email me with questions or if you need more photos. Also check my other auctions to see the Confederate Southern Cross of Honor that belonged to the same man. This item can be shipped anywhere and will be shipped insured.
Due to the number of questions on the hat I am adding the following information. The hat is made of black felt, I do not know if it is wool felt or beaver felt. The felt is thin, it is not thick felt like what is found on a modern cowboy hat. The felt has no damage or discolorations but is some what stiff. The hat has never been cleaned except for being brushed off with a soft bristle paint brush when found. The leather head band is made of very thin leather and is 1-1/2 inches wide, it is made of 3 pieces of leather. The leather is stiff but is not falling apart or breaking loose. The hat is basically in as found condition except for being brushed off with a paint brush. It would be a good idea to have the hat professionally cleaned by someone who knows how to conserve antique fabrics. If you have any other questions about this hat please email me.
