Conn 8B Symphony Grand—"Gustat" This is a rare Conn 8B Symphony Grand (Gustat) trumpet, serial number 32xxxx, dating the horn to 1936. The features that distinguish the Gustat from the similar Conn 2B are: Vertically aligned first valve slide (the 2B's was canted) .458 bore (#1 1/2) .480 bore on the first valve slide One piece bell Big (huge) powerful toneThis trumpet has the one piece bell--a seam that was visible before polishing runs to the lip of the bell flare (you can see a faint trace at about 5 o'clock in photo 5). It has the vertically aligned, dual bore first valve slide, and the bell alloy with its silvery grey cast is definitely not like any other brass you will ever see on a Conn trumpet . Gustat's were made with a special brass alloy, C17, reputed to produce a more penetrating sound than other Conn trumpets. Compared to the yellow, gold, and French brass 22Bs, 25Bs, and 2Bs I've played, the alloy lives up to its reputation. The trumpet has patches on the lead pipe and on the first valve casing port that connects to the bell. The lead pipe also has multiple pings and there is a repaired (silver soldered) thin split in the tube under the finger hook (photo 6). The flare of the bell is not completely smooth, but a decent brass tech can roll it out for little cost. This is a great candidate for complete restoration. There are repair techs specializing in vintage trumpets who can fabricate and replace the lead pipe, or you can play it as is. Even in its present condition it is one of the best sounding Conn trumpets from the 30s or 40s you will ever play. Functionally the trumpet is excellent. The slides pop when you pull them, the valves are free and quick with good compression, and it has a booming lower register and a clear, penetrating upper range. Intonation is excellent up and down the scale. It is a pleasure to play. All slides are free, and waterkey springs, corks, and felts were recently replaced. The trumpet is hand buffed polished brass and was recently chem cleaned. It comes with what appears to be the original case, which is in good condition for its age.
