Hard-to-find double-wall metal Bb Albert system clarinet by C.G. Conn Co. of Elkhart, Indiana. Stamped with Serial No. 217 which I believe dates it to the early to mid 1890s. Overall length 25-1/4". Instrument is complete, plating is 98% intact (worn through on a few key touchpieces and tone holes). Buffet wooden mouthpiece in fair condition. Barrel has one small ding, bell has a few dings that a brass repair shop could easily remove. Lower joint has one key-post that wiggles a bit, needs to be resoldered. Probably needs a re-pad and some springs replaced, but very restorable. No case. According to an article appearing in Elkhart's Brass Roots , published by the Shrine to Music Museum in Vermillion, SD, 1994: This metal clarinet is, according to Conn's patent (#410,072, August 27, 1889), "composed of two light metal tubes, the inner one being the size of the bore, the outer one the size of the circumference of the ordinary wooden clarinet; these tubes when joined together form a hollow chamber between the outer surface and and the bore of the instrument, thus protecting the pitch of the instrument in variable temperature." Conn produced double-wall clarinets only during the last dozen years of the nineteenth century because, he wrote, "the prejudice against metal for clarinets was difficult to overcome. They were beautiful instruments, had immense volume, were greatly admired and successfully used in Military Bands. They have had their day and have been superseded by the Improved and Perfected System Wonder Ebonite Clarinets which are now so generally in use" ( C. G. Conn's Truth, Vol. V, No. 5, May 1903, p.1 ). Buyer pays $15.00 insured priority mail shipping to US address; International shipping will be via insured Global Express Mail, typically in the $35-40 range. Payment via PayPal Only. Please email if questions. Additional Keywords: Silver, boxwood, ivory, antique
