CONQUISTADOR, Silver and Amethyst Butter Dish Marguerite wenner Gren Design Fully marked, ca. 1949- 1952. CONQUISTADOR. Axel Wenner-Gren was the owner of this company formed by acquiring smaller silver workshops in Mexico City. Conquistador was the largest silver manufacturer in Mexico City; although they did develop their own designs, they also contracted with silver designers who did not have the extensive equipment and facilities for production that Conquistador offered. William Spratling signed a contract for Conquistador to produce and market new designs. This beautiful butter dish is made out of silver and amethysts. It is composed by two pieces, the dish and the lid. The dish has four cabochon amethysts inlaid on each point of it. It measures: 7 X 3 5/8 in. The cover of it is rectangular and on the sides it has sixteen amethyst cabochons inlaid, also it is decorated with chiseled geometrical figures. On the top of it has two amethyst flowered form pieces joined together into a leave form lid and soldered into the main piece. They are also decorated with chiseling.
