You are considering a very nice dated, authentic, Spanish 1 real cob coin with two dates of 77 (for 1677). It is in excellent shape after spending more than 300 years lying on the dynamic reefs of Isla del Muerto off the coast of Ecuador. The coin was recovered from the shipwreck of the Santa Maria de la Consolacion by Robcar S.A., the Ecuadorian company that discovered the wreck and was authorized to recover her remains. About 80% of the coins from this wreck were recovered on a shallow reef and are very thin and underweight. This is a very nice example of a Conso coin with a choice cross and just a little thinning around the edges. The Obverse has a bold, complete cross with nice castles and lions, and a clear date. The Reverse is also nicely centered and has plenty of detail as well. It has nice pillars and waves, a clear denomination (1), two mintmarks (P), one vague assayer (E) and another two-digit date of 77. It also has part of the motto PLVS VLTRA (More Beyond) in the center. This coin was minted at Potosi, in 1677 by Antonio de Ergueta during the reign of King Charles II of Spain. It comes with an official certificate of authenticity issued by ROBCAR S.A. (the company that discovered and salvaged the wreck) similar to the one shown and a plastic flip with Robcar's logo printed on a paper insert. This is a choice shipwreck coin, with many of the important details in bold. It shows some signs of having been on the seafloor for 300+ years, but not many. It would make an excellent additition to your Cob collection or would look excellent mounted in a gold bezel and worn as jewlery. Shipwreck coins have gone up alot in the last few years and should continue to do so with most governments further restricting shipwreck salvage. This one also has a very interesting history; the ship was sunk while trying to evade an attack by the famous pirate Bartholomew Sharp and his crew of Bucaneers. Please study the coin carefully and feel free to ask any questions before placing your bid. I ship via USPS priority mail, insured with delivery confirmation. The cost is $8.50. This includes a padded mailer plus the postage, delivery confirmation, and insurance. I have never made money on shipping and usually spend around $10.00 on the mailer, insurance and shipping. I will combine auctions for the highest shipping fee + $1.00 per additional item to cover the extra handling and insurance. Payment is expected within 3 business and immediate payment is expected if you use Buy-It-Now. If you need more time to pay, please contact me before placing your bid. International bidders please contact me prior to bidding as overseas shipping will be nearly triple the shipping price I have listed.
