Handspun Handcarded Contemporary Transitional Pattern by Lena R. Toledo
Lena R. Toledo is a Navajo weaver from Ojo Encino, New Mexico who is known for her handcarded and handspun rugs. Lena produces her rugs in much the same way that Navajo rugs were woven 100 years ago and uses no commercial wool. The weaving is 28 inches wide and 39 inches long and has an area of 7.6 square feet. It has 6 warps per inch and 28 wefts per inch (this is counted over two warp lines; Lena had to weave in both directions, each of which constitutes a row). The sides of the rug have two-ply edging cords. Our starting price for the rug is under $20 per square foot and is a true bargain considering the skill and time required. The pattern used in this rug is one that Navajo weaving shares with Rio Grande weaving and it is very often seen in both Rio Grande blankets and Navajo pieces from the Transitional Period (1870-1895). Lena used wool from her own sheep and dyed the red wool with aniline dyes. All of the other colors are the natural colors from Lena's sheep. The gray color exhibits a very pleasant abrash color variation that is commonly seen in vintage rugs, but is very rare today because of the widespread use of commercial yarns. The rug was produced in September of 2007, and was purchased at the October 2007 Crownpoint Rug Auction. The rug is in new condition, is clean and has been stored in a non-smoking environment. A certificate of authenticity and the original Crownpoint Auction tag will accompany the rug to its new home. With an appropriate pad, this rug can be used on the floor and will give many, many years of enjoyable wear. Weaving in Beauty is dedicated to extending the harmony of Navajo weaving through textile conservation, education and sales. The rugs that we offer for sale are purchased either directly from the weaver or at auctions in which the weaver sets a reserve. Our price for a weaving is based on the price we pay to the weaver plus a reasonable allowance for our expenses. Our Ebay Rug of the Week will present a unique rug from our inventory and we hope that you'll enjoy seeing them as much as we have enjoyed collecting them and presenting them to you. Because our rugs often travel to classes, we specialize in small format weavings, but many of the weavers we work with do weave in larger sizes, so please contact us if you are interested commissioning a weaving or in locating a particular type of rug. Please ask if you have questions on this rug. We will gladly ship internationally, but please contact us before bidding so that we can determine costs for shipping.
