RESIDENT STAFF COOK COUNTY HOSPITAL CHICAGO 1914-1915 Oh, w to begin! This photograph in its frame, measures 23 1/4" tall by 19" wide. Unframed it measures 21 3/4" tall by 17 1/2" wide. The photo was made by The Walinger Co., 37 S. Wabash Ave. Chicago. Cook County Hospital traces its beginnings to 1835 when Cook County established a "poor house" w it provided medical care to the poor and indigent. This facility was opened in 1914, bearing the address of 1835 W. Harrison St., Chicago Illinois. It was designed by the architects Paul Gebhardt and Richard Schmidt. This magnificent building was constructed a cost of approximately 3 million dollars. I believe this facility was in use until 2002. This photograph bears the portraits of 68 resident staff members in 1914-1915. Of the 68, 4 pictured are women. The history of these 68 people is probably astounding. Cook County Hospital has always been known for its research and learning facilities; I assume that at least some of these doctors are recognized for their contributions to medicine. This must have hung so proudly in its building! How or when this photograph ever left Cook County Hospital is a mystery to me. Maybe it was a gift upon a retirement. Maybe t was redecorating or remodeling at the hospital and it was simply taken down and not returned to its space on the wall. It just waited quietly in a closet or storage room. The photo is in excellent condition. The backing has been removed at some point in its life, though not by my hands. I have left this piece in the condition I received it. Well, maybe a bit less dusty. On the glass, under certain people, t is a little red line of paint or marker of some sort. I have never removed these markings, as they obviously meant something to someone. Note that these marks are on the glass, not on the photo itself. I have not compiled a list of the people on this photo. If you would like me to take a look for someone in particular, please let me know, I would be more than happy to take a look for you. A few of the names are: V.E. Dudman, B.S. M.D.; A.E. Isham, A.B., B.Mus., M.D. (one of the women); W.H. Woolston, A.B., M.D.; C.W. Wells, B.S., M.D.; C.L. Von Hess, M.S. M.D.; and H.E. Webb, M.D. This infrequently seen morsel of history is 94 years old. We ship USPS, insurance recommended and extra.
