Scarce and historical bill of exchange of Corcoran & Riggs, bankers in Washington D.C, dated July 3, 1848., number 73. payable by Bank of America in New York. Several signatures endorse the back including Artemas Ward. and E.W. Clark, Dodge & Co.Corcoran & Riggs was organized by William Wilson Corcoran and George Washington Riggs in 1840. The name was changed to Riggs Bank in 1854. and 1n 1896 it became the Riggs National Bank. After many years of financial controversy and scandal, it was taken over by PNC Financial Services in 2005.The Corcoran & Riggs firm is famed for the financing of Samuel Morse's invention of the telegraph in 1845, money for the Mexican-American War in 1847, Peary's first expedition to the North Pole, expansion of the U.S. Capitol Building during the Civil War, and the purchase of Alaska in 1868.
