W.H. Malcolm Plant was founded in 1965 with the amalgamation of John Best Plant Hire of Glasgow. In the beginning the total fleet consisted of 30 machines, with the emphasis being on tracked loading shovels. In September 1965 Malcolm Plant took delivery of a Hymac 580 tracked 360 degree hydraulic excavator, thought to be the first in Scotland. Hydraulic excavators revolutionised the earth moving industry and Malcolm Plant had one of the largest fleets in Scotland from 3tons–50tons. Malcolm Plant also controlled the low-loader trailers and Donald Malcolm had a liking for the Atkinson chassis and Gardner engines and had a large fleet of tractor units and tippers. At present the Construction Division fleet has 80 tippers and 120 items of plant.
