“LIMITED EDITION” “RARE AIRCRAFT-RETIRED-HARD TO FIND” Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series AA33502 Boeing B-52D Stratofortress Diecast ModelUSAF SAC 307th SW, "Diamond Lil", Utapo RTAFB , Thailand , 1972 1:144 Scale – Length 13.5”- Wingspan 15.5” This awesome versatile aircraft was purchased many years ago along with other aircraft and tanks that supported me and my fellow soldiers on the front lines while serving in Desert Storm. Although this particular variant was not a participant, the B-52D Strategic Bomber cleared the way and saved many NATO lives. This aircraft is truly a nice collectable. It comes from a smoke free and pet free environment. The aircraft has never been on display. They also have never been removed from the box since in my possession. Has to be seen to be appreciated in its far east camo scheme. Historical Note : B-52 strikes were an important part of Operation Desert Storm . Flying about 1,620 sorties, B-52s delivered 40% of the weapons dropped by coalition forces while suffering only one non-combat aircraft loss, with several receiving minor damage from enemy action. Starting on 16 January 1991, a flight of B-52Gs flew from Barksdale AFB , Louisiana , refueled in the air en route, struck targets in Iraq , and returned home – a journey of 35 hours and 14,000 miles round trip. It set a record for longest-distance combat mission. B-52Gs operating from bases at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom; Moron AB, Spain; and the island of Diego Garcia flew bombing missions over Iraq, initially at low altitude. After the first three nights, the B-52s moved to high-altitude missions instead, which reduced their effectiveness and psychological impact compared to the low altitude role initially played. The conventional strikes were carried out by three bombers dropping up to 153 750-pound bombs, covering an area 1.5 miles long by 1 mile wide. The bombings demoralized the defending Iraqi troops, many of whom surrendered in the wake of the strikes. In 1999, the science and technology magazine Popular Mechanics described the B-52's role in the conflict: “The Buff's value was made clear during the Gulf War and Desert Fox.
