One of my favorite books when I was a child was Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. Corgis are great dogs around horses and it seemed a perfect combination to sculpt them together on a pair of bookends. I do believe that animals communicate with each other and it makes me happy to think that this intelligent red & white Pembroke Welsh Corgi just finished reading my beloved childhood book to his beautiful black horse friend... "My troubles are all over and I am at home; and often before I am quite awake, I fancy I am still in the orchard, standing with my old friends under the apple trees." The bookends originated from pouring liquid clay into a mold. They are one of the few molds that I actually own and they are now discontinued. The horses, corgis, books, and apple trees were all sculpted by hand out of raw clay. The first bookend shows a red and white corgi reading Black Beauty to his horse and corgi friend that appear to be captivated by the story. The second bookend has all three animals fast asleep after they had finished reading the book. I attached all of the hand sculpted pieces to the bookends with liquid clay slip before the first firing. Next I hand painted everything including the detailed tiny jacket book cover with ceramic paints. Three coats of a tough overglaze give the bookends a durable glossy permanent finish. Each read more
