Leyland Royal Tiger PSU1, was built by the long established Blackpool bus & coach builders, H V Burlingham Ltd and left the works in the autumn of 1950, to travel the short distance from Blackpool North to Lytham Road South. Delivered new and outshopped in the distinctive black & silver livery of S & J Wood Ltd, in accordance with the Burlingham time honoured tradition, the new, sleek body style was named and attributed after the first customer, “Seagull Tours” and as EFR 950, the first of many hundreds of Burlingham “Seagull” luxury coaches, entered immediate service. Like other coach operators , S & J Wood started in the early 1900’s with horse-drawn vehicles, used mainly for weddings and funerals and it was not until after the First World War that charabancs were introduced. These vehicles, known locally as "Sharras”, were basic lorries, for wood and coal or whatever? during the week and were fitted with a boat type body, with open wooden seating for weekend excursions in and around the local area. The fleet was steadily increased during the 1930’s until at the end of the 1940’s they owned over 20 vehicles, including early Duple bodied Bedford OB’s. In the early summer of 1953, this coach had the distinction and privilege to transport Blackpool FC on their triumphant return to the Fylde, after winning the FA Cup. Joe Smith’s read more
