UNIQUE CORKSCREW IN SHAPE OF FOOT WITH BAMBOO BOTTLE OPENER AS SHEATH. Carl Aubock, (1900-1957) was part of the the movement by Austrian artists who chose to ignore the sameness in mass- produced home furnishings and design, and concentrate instead on the creativity of the artist's vision. Aubock's corkscrew shows his playful, distinctive style.
The corkscrew itself is a beautifully designed and crafted modernist interpretation of the human foot, with the screw coming out of the foot above the ankle. It is signed on the sole with Carl Aubock's signature. Made in Austria is incised under the signature. What is so creative and humorous is that Aubock used a common bamboo handled bottle opener to act as a sheath for the corkscrew. The effect is that of a ruffled pant leg a la Caribbean dancer, with the foot showing below. While Aubock used the sheath as an integral part of the corkscrew, the sheath is very rarely found together with the bronze corkscrew. Natural bamboo is very susceptible to temperature fluctuations. The sheath which accompanies this piece has a short crack on either side because of the dryness of the air. A bowl of water near the bamboo has already begun to close the cracks. With similar care, the cracks should not be a problem. Please contact me with any questions and to see more images of this witty and delightful piece of mid-20th c. Modern design.
