This is an extremely rare and quite interesting original paper broadside poster printed for the CORNELL ALUMNAE (Alumni) CLUB BAZAAR, SAGE COLLEGE PARLORS....obviously, this is not an 1893 World's Fair item per se, but through the involvement of one of the featured members at the 1893 and 1894 World's Fairs, Dr. Issa Tanimura, it seems at least somewhat relevant in terms of interest for those who are following this sort of thing....the Cornell University Christmas Bazaar was held on December 9th and 10th, Friday and Saturday Afternoons and Evenings (no date that I can find, but it seems likely to have taken place circa early 1900s), and was to feature Six Booths of Xmas Novelties, Five Pictures painted by Mrs. Comstock, a Christmas Tree, Fortune Telling, a Bake Sale, Canned Fruit, Ice Cream, and so on, with the main focus on all things Japanese, a big passion in the Victorian Era of course, and in this case the main event was a presentation/exhibition on JAPANESE RURAL LIFE, with a Farm-House, Wells, Fences, Cherries, Wisteria, Maples, Chrysanthemums, etc...as constructed by the Japanese Students at Cornell, and "DIRECT FROM JAPAN", PURE TEA SERVED BY DR. TANIMURA, FELLOW IN AGRICULTURE, with Japanese Cakes, Souvenirs, and auction of Japanese Artistic Wares to follow, and so on, plus Ice Tea!, Japanese Music!!, and Tea Ice!! (???...)....ADMISSION FREE, & DANCING IN THE GYMNASIUM, Both Evenings....anyway, it's quite unusual and full of great and amusing detail evoking the atmosp of the Ithaca, New York region at that time, and is in generally very good condition overall albeit somewhat wrinkled and showing the obvious edgewear and nicking, and quite a bit of creasing along the borders and the folds from many years of storge, with some tanning likewise and t...it is overall quite supple though, with mostly clean background and good bright red color to the typeface overall, and really only delicate and fragile along the right hand edge w most of the nicking and chipping is present....it measures approximately 12 1/4" by 18" overall, and would look splendid when properly matted and framed.....this is one of a group of books, newspapers, and ephemera items pertaining to the history of the Avon and Rochester, New York region which I'll be listing this next week or so (Note: Dr. Tanimura was also a featured lecturer, and Councilor to the Japanese Tea House at the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, and a Member of the Jury for Tea Exhibits at World's Fair in Antwerp, in 1894....this is one in a series of rare antique items, vintage magazines and bulletins, Hugo Gernsback Magazines on Radio and Electricity, and other items of ephemera and rare and unusual books and magazines relating to Fashion, Christmas and Holiday Collectibles and Cards, Automotive and Hollywood Memorabilia, Natural History, Science, Art, Aviation, and other subjects of great interest (take your pick), that I'll be listing over the next couple of weeks at whipplesbooks on ebay.
