Collation6 (of 7) vols., approx. 4,000 pp. Binding & Condition BindingThese beautiful contemporary full leather bindings are decorated with elegant gilt-stamped spines as well as two gilded spine labels. Furthermore, the edges of the boards were enhanced with beautiful gilded ornamental stampings. The edges of the book block are red. In order to preserve and protect these six wonderful volumes they come in a custom-made slipcase made of leattte and marbled paper. Condition Most volumes with some minor faults on heads and tails. The hinges of three volumes are cracked. The paper is in good condition and only slightly darkened. Currently, t is no other edition of Corpus Iuris Civilis available on the international antiquarian market in such wonderful condition and completeness. A single volume of this edition was lately offered by The Lawbook Exchange (USA) for $ 807,- (approx. 600 €). A Venice octavo edition (1591) in five volumes is now available for 5,000 € (approx. $ 6,500) (Libraria Antiqua Perini, Verona, Italy). Description This is the Corpus Iuris Civilis, the famous Roman body of law compiled in the sixth century. It was the ultimate standard work and textbook for generations of jurists beginning with Late Antiquity until the Late Middle Ages. Regardless of their geographical origins, all jurists used it in the whole of Western civilization. In 1581, the edition at hand was printed in Lyon and prefaces as well as commentaries were added to increase its utility.
