I continue to sell my large collection of Civil War letters and postal history. I am offering a Confederate cover franked with a four margin, pen-cancelled CSA #11 (it might be an #11a but I am no expert) and a nice blue Fancy Hill, VA dcds. The letter is from a Maggie Gilbirt and is addressed to James M. Short of the 3rd Battalion of Valley Reserves . T is a small 4-page letter enclosed written on a piece of ledger paper and dated January 11, 1864. The ink on the letter has faded considerably but it is still possible to read. The letter's content is general and concentrates mainly on the impact of war on the homefront and how much the local boys serving in the army are missed. Ms. Gilbirt writes: "This miserable war will not last for all ways. . . . Times is hard and no liklyhood of getting any beter soon but we are beter of than the poor soldiers an no aught to complain". Aside from the faded ink, both the cover and enclosure are in pretty good condition. This scarce cover and enclosure would make a wonderful addition to any Civil War collection. Please see my other listings for other items of possible interest to the Civil War enthusiast.
