Cowan#720 Swirl Dancer nude flower figure in Special Ivory glaze. Marked with die-impressed circular Cowan mark (Saloff #8). Excellent condition. 9 3/4" tall. This form won 1st Prize at the 1926 Cleveland Museum of Art May Show. I am including a reproduction of the original patent, which reads:"Be it known that I, R. GUY COWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1499 Cohasset Avenue, Lakewood, in the county of Cuvahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new, original, and ornamental Design for a Flower holder, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof. The figure is a perspective view of a flower holder showing my new design. I claim: The ornamental design for a flower holder, as shown..."R. Guy Cowan opened his first pottery studio in 1912 in Lakewood, Ohio. The pottery operated almost continuously, with the exception of a break during WWI, at various locations in the Cleveland area until it was forced to close in 1931 due to financial difficulties. Many of this century's finest artists began with Cowan and it associate, the Cleveland School of Art. This fine art pottery, particularly the designer pieces, are highly sought after by collectors. Many people are unaware that it was due to R. Guy Cowan's perseverance and tireless work that art pottery is today considered an art form and found in many art museums.I am selling my entire collection of lady/dancing flower frogs, so check out my other auctions!
