Original Renaissance Era Printed & Hand-Illuminated Book of Hours Calendar Leaf, Paris, c. 1534
CALENDAR FOR JUNE, JULY & AUGUST Feasts listed for Saints Margaret, Peter and Paul, Mary Magdalene, James and Martha!! IM-7904: A lovely original leaf from a printed and hand-illuminated Renaissance prayer book, the Book of Hours. 34 lines of Latin text on animal vellum. Large "KL" initials (for KALENDS) are in liquid gold on a deep blue or red ground. Elaborate borders hand-painted with tempera color in a floral motif with acanthus leaves and berries on liquid gold ground. This leaf measures 155 x 102 mm (6 1/8 x 4"). Printed by Germain Hardouyn and fully illuminated by hand in gold and colors in his workshop. This Book of Hours leaf was produced at the Hardouyn workshop in Paris, France, (Use of Rome) c. 1534. This is an original, not a reproduction and its condition is as shown in the photos. Please note that the "mustard" color that you see on the initials is gold that was used to illuminate this leaf 500 years ago! The light reflection from the scan distorts the true gold color and brilliance of this feature. In purpose and format, printed Books of Hours followed the older manuscript examples. The more luxurious were printed on vellum, such as this specimen. This leaf contains the calendar for 6 June through 8 August. Among the feasts listed are Saints Margaret, Peter and Paul, Mary Magdalene, James and Martha. Left of the saints' days are repeating letters A - G called Dominical Letters since they help find Sundays. Far left is a column of Roman numerals i - xix called Golden Numbers to indicate appearances of new moons, and counting ahead 14 days, full moons throughout the year (year + 1; divide by 19; remainder is Golden Number - if zero GN = 19). Finally: each month had 3 fixed points: Kalends (1st day) Ides (middle) & Nones (9th day before Ides). All days in between were counted backwards from these points. Books of Hours are personal prayer books of a devout and status-conscious society and are not only works of art, but cultural documents of their time. They reveal a unique combination of sacred and secular imagery - made of the finest materials, by the best craftsmen, for a small audience that could both appreciate and afford them. This leaf will arrive to you with a Certificate of Authenticity . Framing this lovely leaf using acid-free matting and UV-filtering glass will preserve this fascinating piece of history for many years to come.
